You Are The Product, Stupid!

On and off there is this rant on social media about platform user interface, privacy and functionality changes. Every time Twitter, Facebook and other social networks introduce something new to their design or functionality, the user base goes berserk. So it happened recently with the new Twitter profile page, or the changed Facebook timeline, or even with Condoleezza Rice starting work at Dropbox.

For them, you are not a “user”, you ARE the product, dear! Or more correctly – the content YOU create on their platform. So you are the product and this product Facebook or Twitter sell to advertisers, not their platforms. So get over it and channel your disagreement towards making the content better!

Sorry, Devs – User is The King – Get Over It!

Lately, I have been under fire on Twitter for saying that Apple’s iOS offers the best user experience among mobile platforms. This cannonade comes particularly from the developers’ side of the equation, not the UX professional one. I guess this is more due to the perception that I am some sort of a fan boy when it comes to this particular brand. I might be to some extent and I certainly find myself subconsciously biased on occasions. After all, I’ve been using Apple products since 2006 on a personal level and many others in my work – Microsoft, Dell, Android, Blackberry, HP etc… None of the latter has ever offered me a user experience getting even closer to the one that iOS has.
I am getting here on the wrong foot, am I not?
A professional UX designer should never rely on his/her own perception of a product’s user experience. In fact, one should be looking into research findings, user needs, platform objective, target audience, market share, platform design restrictions and ease of tasks performance. So let me take a step back from my previous statement about the iOS.

Twitter’s popularity in the past couple of years has grown exponentially. Although this platform is trying hard to position itself as a first choice for the news and media aficionados, it is just as much a communication platform.

Visualizing The User’s Data

The end of this working da was marked by the two presents two major social networks Twitter and Foursquare made to their users – visualized usage history.

On one side Twitter joined forces with Vizify and on the other Foursquare with Samsung Galaxy 4. Both campaigns are using big data (at least in the case those super users on their platforms). And as much as it is a treat for the socializer, it is also a great marketing effort. An attempt to attract new users and strengthen the relationship between the social network and its real gold – the tweep or the location based sharer. It also shows us how much exactly someone can learn about our behavior based on what we do and share with the world online.
