Last week I sent my 1000th tweets @borislavkiprin. It has taken me a bit more than a year to reach that number. There have been days without tweets and some with rather hectic postings. It is only natural that it is what it is. It is a personal account after all, not a business one. But before I share some thoughts on the experience, let’s lay down the analysis background…
As of the moment of this post, I am running at 187 followings, 157 followers, 1 listed and 1,005 tweets. I have created 9 lists that I manage my daily reads in. I basically regard my Twitter as a source of knowledge, keeping touch with friends and colleagues, spotting trends, job searching and sharing my thoughts and blog posts. And according to Klout, I am an Explorer “You actively engage in the social web, constantly trying out new ways to interact and network. You’re exploring the ecosystem and making it work for you. Your level of activity and engagement shows that you “get it”, we predict you’ll be moving up.“.
However, I see some discrepancies among general perception and my take on Twitter. I see that many people focus on getting a huge number of followers. They follow back, too. I can’t imagine following twitterers in the thousands. For me, it does not make any sense, especially for a personal account. How can one read so much and where the hell he/she gets the time to do so. Even with selective reading, the question comes to relevance. How relevant are the messages one publishes to you (the follower)? Social media are about the conversation and not about a static number of followers/fans. Engagement is everything, and tweets and posts that dodo did not attract any readings are simply a voice in the desert or pure exhibitionism.
But what I am trying to do with my Twitter account?
- Share knowledge by retweeting interesting posts, links and thoughts of the accounts I follow or sources I stumble upon during my online readings.
- Let people know that there is a new blog post on my website.
- Learn something new from the people I follow.
- Looking for job openings in the digital marketing industry.
- Sharing thoughts on topics I find interesting.
- Data mining in terms of reports.
What are your takes on your Twitter strategy and the performance of your account there?
