eLearning has been a big part of my personal development ever since I have graduated from Fudan University. And I am sure I am not the only one using digital media to get further in the brain area.
For me, it all started with research during my university years. But once I started working full-time, this was pretty much the only way to keep up with changes. A Google AdWords tutorial here, a Google Analytics instructional video there, and soon enough, I found myself hooked up. Later on, I even did my Masters in a mix of face-to-face and eLearning modules (forums, presentations, videos etc.).
The last courses I took online were a Product Management one and a Growth Hacking one. And I can’t help but think that there is so much room for improvement…
eLearning Formats
In most of the cases, I find myself restrained to a single device usage for my eLearning. The courses I buy or subscribe to are available only in an Internet browser. I cannot take them away with me on my iPod or smartphone for that matter. It would be great to have the courses as an audio or video file or in an app as a best-case scenario. This way, I would be able to learn while commuting or sweating on the treadmill.
eLearning Quality
I try to be very selective when it comes to picking up my courses. But from time to time, I stumble upon very indecipherable accents, poor audio quality or badly cut videos. And since I sometimes purchase discount courses, there is no way to preview the quality before I press the Buy button. I would love to have more information on the instructor and the course before deciding to go for it. But a preview made available will create much more confidence in the potential learner.
eLearning Certification
Most of the courses offer certification upon completion. But if one is really looking into getting on an official certificate widely accepted, there are rarely instructions on where to get it from. An instruction, a short video or a list at the end of the course would satisfy that need.
I have no doubt that the eLearning industry will continue developing. More and more people will opt to learn on their own terms and schedule, rather than the traditional way. It will become easier also to record and make courses available to a wide audience. We just need to find that trust in this medium.
Happy eLearning!
